Continuing our commitment to highlighting the work of exceptional DC-based emerging artists, Transformer’s 16th Annual DC Artist Solo Exhibition presents the work of David R. Ibata in his first solo exhibition.

I See a Darkness presents a new series of paintings from Ibata, reflecting on the complexities of growing up in an American culture steeped in violence and focusing on the psyches of hardened men as an exploration of an ever-escalating violence and despair in the American spirit.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

David R. Ibata is an American painter from the Washington DC metropolitan area. He received his education from the Corcoran College of Art & Design (BFA, 2008) followed by the New York Academy of Art (MFA, 2010), and has been a copyist at the National Gallery of Art since 2012.

Join Terrence Washington, National Gallery of Art, in conversation with artist David R. Ibata within his exhibition, I See a Darkness.

Terence Washington is a program assistant in the department of academic programs at the National Gallery of Art in addition to assisting with projects in the modern art department. He joined the NGA after graduating from Williams College in 2017 with an MA in art history, and his research and writing so far have explored lynching photography and contemporary art, especially work that attempts to deal with the history of racial violence in the United States. He has had essays published by the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Clark Art Institute, and his writing will be featured in a forthcoming book by the photographer Zora Murff.

Reflecting on the complexities of growing up in an American culture steeped in violence, Washington, DC–based artist David R. Ibata has created a new series of paintings focusing on the psyches of hardened men as an exploration of an ever-escalating violence and despair in the American spirit. In this conversation, part of the Works in Progress series at the National Gallery of Art, Gallery educator Terence Washington will discuss with Ibata his work and his influences in cinema, media, and painting, in an effort to make a particularly American darkness visible. This program is held in conjunction with the solo exhibition David Ibata: I See a Darkness, on view January 12 through February 23, 2019, at Transformer, a DC-based nonprofit that promotes emerging artists locally, nationally, and internationally.
