The Geometry of Undoing presents artist Jennifer DiZefalo in her first solo exhibition with a new series of paintings inspired by the bold, geometric patterns of barn quilts as seen on the sides of farmhouses, sheds and barns during recent family vacations to the Poconos in Pennsylvania. These painted quilt blocks, often eight foot squared or more, stand in contrast to quilting's origins as a historically feminine fiber craft. “This contrast drew me in,” says DiZefalo, who continues “I saw a relationship to the abstract painting I have been practicing and studying since art school.“

DiZefalo reconfigures the traditional eight-point star with her new body of paintings through the lens of contemporary abstraction. By isolating small sections of the star, DiZefalo shifts, rotates and modifies the arrangement of shapes. Similar to the process of found or cut-up poetry, each fragment becomes an entirely new composition. The resulting paintings investigate balance, rhythm, and the play of color. Through this improvisational approach, the quilt is both referenced and transformed.

The two newest works DiZefalo created for this exhibition, The New Flow and Dipping In The Circle, were developed using the same method, yet rather than referencing quilt patterns, she revisited her earlier paintings. “I focused on small areas, altering them to create new designs. The act of revisiting and reimaging is at the core of my practice” states DiZefalo.
