(e)merge Art Fair 2012
OCTOBER 04, 2012 - OCTOBER 07, 2012
Transformer features artists Mariah Anne Johnson, Andrew Kozlowski and Heather Ravenscroft + selected works from our FlatFile program in Rooms 201 & 202 at the 2nd Annual (e)merge art fair!
Transformer is excited to present DC based artists Mariah Anne Johnson and Heather Ravenscroft, and Alabama based artist Andrew Kozlowski, in the 2012 (e)merge art fair. Each of these artists brings a unique approach to the idea of mapping with the new works they have created specifically for Transformer’s participation in (e)merge. Johnson’s dense stacks of perfectly folded bed sheets and pillow cases convey the idea of sedimentary mappings, while Kozlowski and Ravenscroft’s drawing and prints are reminiscent of deconstructed road and treasure maps. Kozlowski works directly with roadway imagery in screen-printing while Ravenscroft eludes to animal burrows and tracks in her ink and colored pencil drawings.

(e)merge Art Fair 2011
SEPTEMBER 23, 2011 - SEPTEMBER 25, 2011
For Transformer's participation in (e)merge, a new art fair designed to "celebrate galleries, artists, artists' work and the creative process, and to create an energetic environment of collaboration and discovery," we will present new works by DC based artists Erin Boland, Jessica Cebra and Emilia Olsen in a site-specific, hotel bedroom installation.
Each of these artists brings a unique approach to their medium. Boland's drawings and sculptures investigate the dissonance that allows us to explore our anatomies without the physical experience of looking at a dissected human body. Similarly, Cebra's photographic collages disassemble and reassemble glamour shots of women from high-end fashion magazines exploring the aesthetics of decadence and opulence. Olsen's mixed media works on paper revolve around the emotions that girls and women face as they grow out of adolescence and experience flaws, pain, love, sexuality and disappointment.
In addition to the presentation of new works by these three artists, Transformer presented works from our FlatFile program.
Transformer's participation in the (e)merge art fair has been generously sponsored by Comet Ping Pong.

ALPTRAUM!
ALPTRAUM! (translated from German as "nightmare") was a comprehensive group exhibition of small to medium sized works on paper in a variety of disciplines (painting, drawing, screen prints, photography, collage) by an international mix of nearly 100 artists.
Developed by artists Marcus Sendlinger (Berlin) and Jay Stuckey (Los Angeles), and co-curated by Victoria Reis of Transformer (WDC) and Richard Priestly of Cell Project Space (London), ALPTRAUM! features work by twenty DC based artists from Transformer's FlatFile program, along with twenty artists from each of the other participating host cities. ALPTRAUM! organizer Marcus Sendlinger states:
“ALPTRAUM! is an artist led project. It is a model which utilizes global communication between localized artist hubs & clusters to form an international grouping with the intent of opening dialogue across borders and cultures in order to delve into the stuff and mind murk that is either collectively shared or completely random and unrelated, all within the syndrome of ‘The Nightmare’. Each artist draws on their own personal experience in order to visualize anxieties that take them beyond everyday dreams.”
ALPTRAUM! launched at Transformer in December 2010 and has been traveling internationally with exhibitions at: Cell Project Space, London: January 28 – February 27, 2011; Deutscher Kuenstlerbund, Berlin: March 11 – April 15, 2011; The Company, Los Angeles: May 1 – 30, 2011; and blank projects, Cape Town: August 3 – 27, 2011. Additional countries/venues are currently being considered as 2011 & 2012 presentation sites.

No Soul for Sale: A Festival of Independents
JUNE 24, 2009 - JUNE 28, 2009
X-Initiative's NO SOUL FOR SALE – A Festival Of Independents (June 24 – 28, 2009, New York, NY) brought together the most exciting, creative and respected not-for-profit centers, alternative institutions, artists’ collectives and independent enterprises from around the world that contribute to the international art scene by inventing new strategies for the distribution of information and by supporting a diverse cultural program. X invited more than 30 art spaces to travel to New York City to present themselves, their programs and the artists they support. With a gesture of radical hospitality, X provided free space to all participants within the premises of the X building. The participants were allowed to show whatever they choose, be it art, performances, publications, videos, or simply themselves. - www.x-initiative.org
Transformer was honored to be among the dynamic art spaces invited to participate in this exciting festival. We presented works from our FlatFile program, and an engaging new work, the brick project, initiated at the festival by DC-based artist Geoffrey Aldridge.
Now in its third year, Transformer's FlatFile program consists of a growing collection of eclectic, unframed works on paper in a variety of two-dimensional mediums, including: photography, painting, drawing and printmaking, all approximately 16" x 20" in size and smaller. Developed to further grow audience and collectors for emerging artists in tandem with Transformer’s exhibition series, FlatFile includes work by over 50 emerging artists based regionally, nationally and internationally.
The brick project is an interactive work by Washington, DC based artist Geoffrey Aldridge that explores the creative and intellectual process of planning, fabricating, and executing an artistic concept from beginning to an unknown outcome. Timed to take place in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, Geoffrey transformed the Transformer booth space at the NO SOUL FOR SALE festival into a working studio, encouraging the public to engage with his process. Using video, drawing and sculpture, Geoffrey detailed the process of fabricating yellow brick strap-on shoes, and a plan to place them in the public realm. Much like the unpredictability of social, cultural and legal processes that gay men and women encounter daily, the brick project was intended to reflect the processes involved in the continued battle for equal rights, raising questions about futility and efficacy.
The brick project was a precursor to an exhibition of work Geoffrey Aldridge would be presenting at Transformer October 31 – December 5, 2009. Geoffrey Aldridge is represented by *gogo art projects, Conner Contemporary, Washington DC.
